The Fiat 500 is the Ultimate City Car
Переглядів 14 тис.Місяць тому
The classic Fiat Nuova 500 of 1957 was not destined for the stars. It was merely the latest in a line of brilliant small Fiats designed by the great Dante Giacosa, but in the fullness of history, it would become possibly the definitive icon of industrial Italy. The Story of the Lost Mid-Engine MG
Переглядів 204 тис.2 місяці тому
The lost MG D GT was a British Leyland concept from 1970, replacing the evergreen MG B with a radical mid-engine, rear-drive coupe with a wedge shape body, an Austin Maxi-based engine, and Hydrolastic suspension. Had it been launched, it may have been the world's first truly affordable mid-engine sports car. Patreon: www.patreon.com/twincam/ Would you like your car to be in a video? If so, cont...

In the 1990s, BMW were storming towards a domination of desirability in the saloon and coupé market. With its conservative yet individual style of sporting elegance, the E36-generation of BMW 3 Series was at the centre of this, complete with a rear-drive platform and straight-six engines. The BMW E30 is the Ultimate Sports Saloon
Переглядів 20 тис.2 місяці тому
At its launch in 1982, the E30 BMW 3 Series did little to differentiate itself from the original. But by intersecting with societal changes, neatening up the edges, and playing a marketing blinder, BMW propelled themselves to build the cars to be seen in during the 1980s - and today we take the iconic 325iS for a drive. I'm one of those people who got a Focus when it was already a classic. I have a 2004 one, and I got it when it was already 15 years old. It's a blast to drive. I'm trying to preserve it as much as I can because I absolutely refuse to get a new car, it's just perfect for me.

Excellent video. But my Fiat ownership was disastrous! I bought a Punto selecta, 1 year old, in 1996, thanks to the demutualisation of the Alliance and Leicester building society. 1 year of hassle free ownership followed by crisis after crisis. Problems with fuses, gearbox, seat belts, even the key snapped in half in the door! A beautiful car but appalling build quality. It’s been Toyota all the way ever since!😂

I always liked the badge engineering and feel it's a shame it's gone... except it hasn't as you mentioned with VW and Skoda. It may have been messy but it didn't stop the 1100/1300 range from being Britain's best selling car for a long time so on that basis alone I'd challenge the received opinion that it was a bad thing when it came to marketing the car.

I had one of those MG1100's over here in the 'States. Was fun, until all the suspension mounts broke, totaling it. A friend had an Austin America... I think it was the same car. It shook its SU's loose and it burned to a crisp. That, and some other anecdotes regarding british cars has prevented me from ever considering purchasing a British built anything. Why did you do that to yourselves? To be fair, I hate American cars even more.

Mounts broke? Shook loose? Unless you’re driving it off cliffs, how the bloody hell did either of those things happen?

@@TwinCamgood question. But, you miss my point. I would have loved to have a British sports car, if they held together. They didn't. BTW, I also had a Hillman Super (!) Minx. Not an impressive car. All this happened between 1964 and 1967.

Structurally, the 1100 and especially its larger brother, the 1800, were lauded for their body strength. They were rallied, and though didn’t win anything, always finished reliably with little trouble. You’d have needed to purposefully try and break it to achieve what you’re talking about.

You might not beleive this but this is a true story. My relationship with a 1967 Duetto began when I was 21, I'm now 67. I was married for 28 years between then and now. I still have my 67 Duetto.

1:25 In Spain they did, an it worked terribly, mainly because most of the Indicas sold here ended up in the junkyard before 100000km with serious problems after 50000km, also because despite being sold at 6000€ (under 5500 pounds) the car looked really badly built, it consumed a lot of petrol (even the diesels consumed more than most petrol citycars), and confusing pricing policies made the decently equiped versions more expensive than the basic Panda and Matiz (better built) and just a few hundreds of euros shy of the Atos (Amica there in the UK), and many people just spent those 300€ in upgrading to the €8200 reliable boxy korean rather than staying with the €7900 trim of the Indica. A close friend bought a diesel Indica and it was her worst choice in life so far.

Instead of actually producing something as potentially exciting as this, MG has instead always turned out uninspiring cars. For any given time period, they were ( and still are even under the new Chinese brand) always second best…at best…to their competitors. For decades MG were only supported by a clientele of backward-looking, pipe-smoking, die-hard ‘only ever buy British’, Golf Club Geralds in the UK.

    • @TwinCam
      @TwinCam 3 дні тому

I think that’s a deeply revisionist view of MG, not only as the MG B remains the best selling sports car of all time, carrying on the reputation gained by its predecessors of MG as one of the best sports car manufacturers, but even in the 1990s the MG F outsold the Mazda MX-5 in Europe. The F was also perceived to be incredibly chic in the late ‘90s.

I think I had a Matchbox toy of this car, it had BMC Pinafarina stamped underneath. as I grew from schoolboy to driver I realised I never actually seen one and had always wondered what it was. If I found it is the toy worth anything?

Like the plan with the suspension: the world has all but forgotten about how clever this system was. Engine sounds good: can you do a feature on lean burn and why it was discarded for the BMW catalyst system? Is there a roll/crash cage that could be discretely fitted to make the body a little safer in the highly unlikely event that having a little too much fun goes wrong? Not a lot of structure between engine and driver in the original design...
